government of the people

It occurred to me that if people can discount a leader because he does not follow what they perceive to be the teachings of their God, then those same people do not believe in a democratic republic.

Absolutely!

I think the basic idea underlying democracy is encapsulized in the old saying, *Vox populi, vox Dei*: “The voice of the people is the voice of God”. But it really doesn’t take a lot of intelligence to perceive that this isn’t always so — that the people frequently make bad collective decisions, as for example when swept up in war hysteria or paranoia, or in regard to long-term necessities like protecting the environment.

So from time to time we have to face the question as to which of these two we will obey: the people, or God. And some of us, at that point, discover we are pneumocrats (believers the government of the *pneuma*, the Spirit), rather than democrats.

But alas, it’s a no-no to admit you’re not a democrat —

Marshall - It is always good to see your name in my comments section. I think I practice a lot of no-no's because I am quite assuredly an independent. I am sitting with this idea of pneumacrats. This post came from an e-mail from a good friend of mine who wrote me that she is praying God will thwart Obama's plans. I was horrified by the idea of this prayer, and wrestling with how to be a citizen of the Kingdom of God and a citizen of this country. The answer that I am sitting with now is to pray that the will of God be done, or hold the political system in the Light as Friends can and do. I often pray, in the midst of the turmoil, that truth will surface with no expectation of what that truth will be.

You have added more for me to hold.
